A Castleford-based contractor who supplies and installs Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) has been nominated for Best Sustainable Project of the Year at the Builder & Engineer Awards 2013.

SIPBuild UK – which supplies and installs Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) – helped create a space called the GreenHouse in which children learn about clean energy and sustainability at Peat Rigg Outdoor Training Centre.

Other finalists in the same awards category include the Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre in Northern Ireland, while the new London Bridge station beneath The Shard in the capital was nominated for Best Infrastructure Project.

The awards ceremony, hosted by the bi-monthly magazine Builder & Engineer, is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year on November 7 at The Point, a 1,000-seat conference centre at Emirates Old Trafford cricket ground in Greater Manchester.

The £500,000 GreenHouse building contains a ground source heat pump, solar panels and a biomass boiler fuelled by material from the centre’s estate on the edge of the North York Moors national park.

Thermally efficient SIPs walls and roofing boosted the performance of these power systems, while the light weight and small size of SIPs produced enough attic space to accommodate 35 people.

SIPBuild UK commercial director Chris Duckworth said: “I’d like to congratulate the other nominees and thank the panel for recognising the burgeoning role SIPs have in the sustainable building market.

“Structural Insulated Panels are efficient in construction terms – at Peat Rigg we were on site for just ten days – and their thermal qualities are unbeatable.”

SIPBuild UK has also been shortlisted for Best Use of SIPs in the Build It Awards 2013. The ceremony will be held on November 21 in Swindon.
