Title : Thermal Performance and High Speed Delivery – SIPs Wins!

Meadowside CP School , Knaresborough, North Yorkshire

SIP Build UK’s (SIPs) Structurally Insulated Panels have been used to deliver high performance and super-fast speed of build at a North Yorkshire School.

The Challenge-

In July 2012 Sip Build UK were approached by Main Contractors  F Parkinson Ltd., to produce a new Classroom structure and an extension to another Classroom with a lead in period of only 5 weeks. The extensions were to be constructed from SIPS but using a well known main stream 142mm wide Panel.

Sip Build UK ceased the test and challenged their supply chain, designers and engineers to perform in order that the site works could be carried out in the ‘ever diminishing’ summer holiday school period. Parkinson’s had been quoted a totally unrealistic 16 weeks lead in period by another contractor and conscious of the potential problems engaged  Sip Build UK to deliver the structure in SIPS.

Requirements-

Local demographics and the need to provide 2013 standards of classroom resources led to 5 other classrooms being extended to provide integral cloakroom and toilet facilities for each form year.

The extensions were carried out over a further 4 periods as the classrooms became available around school holidays. The SIPS structure was constructed in three days and allowed other trades to promptly commence roofing, rendering, wiring, plumbing and rendering works.

The large classroom 9 was constructed in 5 days and ancillary works were also completed in time for the working area to be safely encapsulated from the live operation of the school and its playground.

TEK 142mm panels were specified and Sip Build UK were able to offer an equal thickness of Panel using the SBS system which actually produced a better performing U Value. SBS were instrumental in ensuring strict delivery periods were achieved.

Features-

The new classrooms and extensions provide exceptional Insulation values and this is reflected in the lower heating requirements. The extensions predominantly ensured the U Value of the external fabric is decreased meaning much warmer classrooms.

We like the way that Architects Jacobs have reflected the unusual shape of the existing classrooms in the new extensions.

The classrooms are colour co-ordinated using a shot through render system fixed onto battens and the SIPS Wall panels. Attractive Glulam purlins and beams were unfortunately covered by suspended ceilings but we feel they would have made a fine addition to the shape of the classroom.

Conclusion-

A short lead in period of Five weeks was met by Sip Build UK co-ordinating their expertise and supply chain. The Classrooms produced were in excess of the design insulation requirement. The five days taken to construct the large classroom unit structure was exceptional and the programme demands of small, quick extensions in limited working space and to very strict timescales was easily with the grasp of the SIPS System and Sip Build UK. We feel that a very effective system has been utilised extremely well and foresee SIPS being the answer to the many constructional problems encountered when education extensions are required. The flexibility on external finishes also makes SIPS a serious candidate for new building.
